IntelliNet Femtocell Gateway
A 3GPP Iu-h Standard Based Femtocell Gateway
The 3G network footprint has continued to gain strides globally and is expected to cover 30% of the global mobile subscribers. With the emergence of HSPA technology, mobile broadband data traffic is growing in leaps and bounds. With the decline in voice ARPU, mobile data services have emerged as the next frontier for competitive service offerings in the telecommunications market. It is estimated that over 75% of mobile usage is indoors but service providers face a key challenge with coverage in the home. Home-zone coverage issues are further exacerbated with the deployment of 3G networks.
Ubiquitous coverage – indoors and outdoors with one number access has been an elusive goal for generations of wireless technologies. Femtocells deliver on the promise of using the existing handset base, improving indoor cell coverage and reducing mobile operator backhaul costs. Femtocells are also emerging as a key technology of choice for the delivery of innovative mobile broadband services to the home-zone.
In order to realize the full potential of the Femtocell access points (FAP) or the Home Node-B (HNB) implementation, an important access gateway element is required. The Femtocell Gateway (FGW) or the HNB-GW provides the access to macro network voice and data services and the control capabilities necessary to manage the large clusters of femtocells.
